Language

“The words you speak become the house you live in.” - Hafiz

My high school English teachers (yes, all of them) were sticklers for language. At the time, I definitely didn’t appreciate the nuances of words, how one word can change the tone and meaning of a sentence. How distinctions in words matter. I found the red ink and the need to go back to an old-school thesaurus in search of a better word a tedious task.

Flash forward a few (or more) years, and I understand the point they were trying to make—words matter. Words create worlds. More importantly, your words create your world. As a coach, I carefully tune in to the words my clients speak. It gives me clues about how they perceive and experience the world. Your language provides insight into your mindset and attitude. While it seems so simple, changing your words can literally change your world. Observe and notice the words you use, especially in your inner voice. How you speak to yourself has more power over you than most people appreciate. Changing your language can literally change your life.

“It’s not the words you say out of your mouth that determine your life, it’s what you whisper to yourself that has the most power.” - Robert T Kiyosaki
